Ssegirinya shows wounded foot in a previous court session.
Buganda Road Court Grade One Magistrate Doreen Olga Karungi has on December 02 granted bail to Kawempe North MP Mohammed Ssegirinya.
Ssegirinya faces, who faces charges of inciting violence through a social media post, was ordered to pay Shs1m cash.
His sureties were bonded Shs10m non-cash.
Wandegeya Councillor Apollo Ariho and Thomas Bagonza stood surety for Ssegirinya.
Grade One Magistrate Karungi ruled that Ssegirinya’s charge was bailable.
She also ruled that it was fair that the legislator should be released so that he can seek specialized treatment after he told court he was in much pain and that his doctors had warned that his body was developing cancerous cells.
According to state prosecution, between August and September 2020, while in Kampala, Ssegirinya published statements on his ‘Ssegirinya Muhammad Fans Page’ Facebook page with the intention of inciting the public to participate in violent activities against a section or group of Ugandans.
One of the Facebook posts read: “I am warning those who are trying to assassinate Hon. Robert Kyagulanyi Sentamu that what will happen will be forty times worse than the 1994 Rwandan genocide.”
However, it remains to be seen if Karungi’s grant of bail to Ssegirinya, who attended via Zoom at Murchison Bay, will win him his freedom from Murchison Bay where he followed today’s proceedings on the hearing of his bail application.
Ssegirinya faces charges of attempted murder, murder and terrorism for allegedly getting involved in the spate of killings that claimed about 30 lives in Greater Masaka sub-region.
His co-accused is fellow NUP MP Allan Ssewanyana of Makindye West.
In recent months, President Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni has intensified his campaign to deny suspected capital offenders bail.
Ssegirinya is expected back in court on December 22 for trial.
