Uganda’s main opposition political party, the National Unity Platform (NUP), has described the death of Jolly Mugisha (née Jolly Kyomugasho), its deputy president for western Uganda, as “a dark cloud [which] has blanketed our revolutionary struggle.”
In a statement, NUP said the news of Jolly Mugisha’s death “hit us with shock.” Fondly referred to as “Maama,” Mugisha was pronounced dead on Monday, September 23, 2024.
NUP President Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu aka Bobi Wine described his deputy as “a true Ugandan heroine.”
“It’s with great sadness that I announce the passing of Hon. Jolly Mugisha, the National Unity Platform Deputy President for Western Uganda,” Bobi Wine, who NUP says is out of the country on official duties, wrote.
“Mama Jolly has passed on this afternoon from Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital where she has been admitted in a coma for several weeks. Mama Jolly will always be remembered as a true Ugandan heroine. Other communication will be made in due course. Rest in perfect peace, comrade Maama!”
Leader of opposition in parliament (LOP) and NUP spokesperson Joel Ssenyonyi described Jolly Mugisha as “not just a leader, but a mother to us,” and one whose “passion and zeal” will be greatly missed.
NUP Secretary General David Lewis Rubongoya described the death of Jolly Mugisha as “a very dark day at NUP.”
According to NUP, before she breathed her last, Jolly Mugisha had spent three weeks at the Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital “where she was being managed by medics.” The party added that “she was in a coma and undergoing treatment in the Intensive Care Unit.”
Weeks ago, Bobi Wine visited Jolly Mugisha at the Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital. (See Details Here).
