Andrew Mwenda and Bobi Wine
Veteran journalist Andrew Mwenda says he finds it strange that the opposition led by Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine’s National Unity Platform (NUP) spent weeks discussing him for wearing a UPDF uniform.
Weeks ago, Mwenda was in the news after a video of him in military uniform and on a UPDF helicopter leaked online.
Mwenda was also seen making statements that some interpreted as having been on behalf of the national army.
Opposition NUP leaders castigated the state for not punishing Mwenda yet security agencies previously arrested and detained the party’s supporters found wearing red berets.
Mwenda says he is surprised that the opposition are making the matter of him wearing an army uniform a big issue to the extent that they have begun quoting the incident in their push for the release of incarcerated party leaders and members.
His statement suggests that Bobi Wine and NUP want to brew a storm in a teacup.
“Recently our opposition spent an entire week in media discussing me wearing a UPDF uniform; this week they took it to parliament,” wrote Mwenda who had previously seemed to ignore the matter.
“It may be flattering to my ego to be given such national profile but I find it strange that for all our vital issues, the opposition choose this.”
It should be remembered that first son Lt Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba had come out to defend Andrew Mwenda, whose brother is Maj Gen Kayanja Muhanga, the man commanding Operation Shujaa, an offensive against ADF in DR Congo. (Read story here).
