The number of unopposed ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) MPs has risen to seven after the Electoral Commission (EC) declared Anita Among sole candidate for the Bukedea Woman MP seat.
This makes Among and six others members of the 11th Parliament just over two months to the 2021 parliamentary elections.
The unopposed are Hilary Lokang of Ik county and Pius Wakabi of Bugahya, both unopposed for two terms now; Gyaviira Ssemwanga of Buyamba, Lilian Paparu Obiale of Arua, Emely Kugonza of Buyanja East, and Enock Nyongore of Nakaseke North.
Among joined the club of the unopposed on October 28 when Bukedea District returning officer Raymond Kisarale kicked her opponents out of the race.
The other opponents, including Merab Amongin, were disqualified for reportedly forging signatures and academic papers.
But Among’s opponents says she bribed those who had seconded them to confess that the signatures used for seconding them were forged.
Amongin also accuses Among for influencing the district electoral officials to decline to nominate her despite a directive from the EC head office.
Among was formerly a member of main opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) but left the party to join the NRM.
For the past five years, she has been an independent MP after declining the FDC ticket for the 2016 election.
