Archbishop Kaziimba Warns Ugandans against Importing Politics of Violence, Tells MPs to Repent Over Shs100m Bribe in Easter Message

The Archbishop of the Anglican Church of Uganda (CoU), Dr Stephen Samuel Kaziimba Mugalu, has cautioned Ugandans against importing politics of violence as the country heads into the 2026 general elections.

Uganda is expected to the polls to choose new leaders at presidential, parliamentary, and local government levels for a five-year term starting 2026.

In recent elections, party primaries and general polls have been characterised by acts of violence, with some supporters killed or injured. In some cases, even the candidates have sustained injuries.

Ahead of the 2021 election, over 50 people, mainly supporters of Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine’s National Unity Platform (NUP), were killed during November protests following the arrest of the opposition party’s flagbearer.

In his Easter 2025 message, Archbishop Kaziimba says Ugandans should “safeguard our country’s stability amidst regional instability.”

“We must not import the politics of violence. Let us be a haven of peace in the region and promote dialogue over violence,” Kaziimba added.

“Respect for human dignity must remain at the centre of our national and regional engagements.”

He also addressed the issue of corruption, describing it as a moral and spiritual issue on top of being a legal matter.

Without mentioning names or even making specific reference to the Shs100m for each NRM MP, Kaziimba called on corrupt officials and politicians to repent of their sins and consider prioritizing the people they represent instead of pushing their selfish interests.

“I am very much concerned about the increasing rate of corruption both in private and public institutions. The media has been filled with reports of some members of public institutions getting huge sums of money for no clear reason at the expense of hospitals that are dilapidated with not enough drugs and medical practitioners, schools being underfunded, poor roads, among others,” said the archbishop.

“Corruption is not only a legal and governance issue—it is also a deeply spiritual and moral issue. It reflects a heart that has turned away from God and from loving one’s neighbour This Easter, we must repent, renew our hearts, and develop empathy for others. We must look beyond ourselves and uphold integrity, justice, and accountability for the good of all Ugandans.”

It should be remembered that last week, each ‘friendly’ NRM, independent and opposition Ugandan MP was given a Shs100m bribe, with some seen flocking parliament at night with bags to collect the money, as reported Here..

President Yoweri Museveni responded by blasting the opposition for making noise about the Shs100m bribe, in what looked like the president confirming that he had indeed given the MPs the money (See Details Here and There).

A list of opposition MPs who have not received the money has been published Here.
