Beti Kamya New IGG, Muhairwe Deputy

President Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni has appointed former lands, housing and urban development minister Beti Olive Namisango Kamya as the new Inspector General of Government (IGG).

Kamya replaces Irene Mulyagonja.

In October 2019, Museveni appointed Mulyagonja to the Court of Appeal bench.

She had served as IGG for seven years, having been appointed to head the inspectorate of government in April 2012.

Kamya, who previously served as minister for Kampala, will be deputized by Anne Muhairwe.

Muhairwe takes over from Mariam Wangadya.

She has been the President of the Uganda Christian Lawyers.

Initially established by the Inspector General of Government IGG Statute in 1988, the Inspectorate of Government became enttrenched under chapter 13 of the 1995 Uganda Constitution

The Inspectorate of Government is an independent institution charged with the responsibility of eliminating corruption, abuse of authority and of public office.

The powers as enshrined in the Constitution and IG Act include to; investigate or cause investigation, arrest or cause arrest, prosecute or cause prosecution, make orders and give directions during investigations; access and search – enter and inspect premises or property or search a person or bank account or safe deposit box among others.
