Police in Mbarara spent the biggest part of Saturday firing teargas to supporters of NUP who had gathered outside Kakyeka stadium to witness launching of party manifesto for 2021.
National Unity Platform leader Robert Kyagulanyi was escorted by security operatives from Ntungamo district where he had gone for the burial of Dr. Anas Kaliisa on his way to Kakyeka for the launch of the campaign manifesto.
As Kyagulanyi approached Mbarara, residents started gathering along the road to have a glimpse of NUP leader. Police had put roadblocks on all routes leading to Mbarara city so as to manage the situation.
At around Rukindo round about 6 km from Mbarara City center along Mbarara-Kabale road, Police directed Kyagulanyi to follow instructions by the security operatives until when he reached the venue but residents kept gathering towards the convoy which forced police to fire teargas.
At 3PM Kyagulanyi reached Kakyeka stadium accompanied by his wife Barbra Itungo where he found other party leaders waiting for him.
He promised to increase salaries for the security forces to shs 1m and his supporters named him Musinguzi.
NUP Spokesperson Joel Ssenyonyi said they want to bring peaceful transfer of power without shading blood like how the NRM government did.
