Bobi Wine Meets US Democratic Congressman Gregory Meeks

 Ugandan main opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) leader and two-time presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine has met US Democratic Congressman Gregory Meeks.

A US Representative for New York’s 5th Congressional District since 2013, Gregory Meeks Ranking member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee and senior member of the House Committee on Financial Services. Congressman since 1997, Meeks previously represented New York’s 6th district.

After the January 15, 2026, which 81-year-old incumbent Yoweri Museveni won according official Electoral Commission results, Bobi Wine went into hiding, coming out to start international engagements in March 2026.

Bobi Wine, who says he fled Uganda after two months of hiding in the country, is keen on lobbying Western officials to slap sanctions against Museveni’s regime, including his son and military chief Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, over alleged human rights violations and election fraud.

Bobi Wine has so far held meetings in Washington DC, including on Capitol Hill.

After his meeting with Gregory Meeks, Bobi Wine talked of their shared vision and the need to demand for accountability.

“It was a pleasure meeting with Representative Gregory Meeks, Ranking member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee and senior member of the House Committee on Financial Services,” wrote Bobi Wine.

“Our shared vision of advancing democratic principles and upholding human rights will only be achieved by holding repressive regimes accountable.”

Bobi Wine confirmed he left Uganda on March 14, describing his departure as temporary and aimed at engaging international stakeholders. Security has not commented on the reasons behind the withdrawal, but the deputy police chief had previously said police would only leave the Magere home after Bobi Wine has returned home, as reported Here.

Meanwhile, Bobi Wine’s Capitol Hill engagements recently sparked debate, with Bobi Wine firing back at critics who accused him of running to ‘bazungu’ to destabilize Uganda. (See Details Here, There and Over There).
