National Unity Platform (NUP) party leader Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine used February 16 Janan Luwum Day to call on religious leaders to speak up against human rights violations.
Uganda celebrated the Janan Luwum Day on Tuesday, 44 years since the Archbishop was killed during Idi Amin Dada’s regime in 1977.
The government of the time officially claimed Luwum had died in a motor accident.
President Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni presided over the celebration at State House Entebbe.
“When this problem of Amin came, we started fighting him from the beginning. He killed Janani Luwum and other people like Benedicto Kiwanuka, but we the freedom fighters avenged the death of these people,” Museveni said.
Yet Bobi Wine accuses the Museveni government of arresting his supporters.
The president insists these are being investigated for various criminal offences.
As Uganda celebrated Janani Luwum Day, Bobi Wine called out religious leaders of being afraid of Museveni.
He also accused them of loving money more than God.
“Religious leaders seem to have turned into business dealers,” claimed Bobi Wine.
“They fear Museveni more than God. I want religious leaders to reflect on the life that Janani Luwum lived.”
