Museveni and DP's Norbert Mao
President Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni has today, Thursday, July 21, appointed Democratic Party (DP) President and Chairman General Norbert Mao the Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs.
Museveni appointed Mao Minister by virtue of the authority conferred on him by Articles 113(1) and 114(1) of the 1995 Constitution of the Republic of Uganda.
The position has been vacant for over a year since Museveni announced a new cabinet, firing Prof Ephraim Kamuntu as Justice and Constitutional Affairs Minister and appointing him presidential advisor on manifesto implementation.
It is not clear where Mao’s ministerial appointment will leave Democratic Party, one of Uganda’s oldest political parties. The argument by Mao and his allies is that the cooperation agreement is between NRM and DP. Top DP organs are yet to endorse the deal.
Mao’s appointment was announced a few hours after Museveni met President Museveni at State House Entebbe. In the Wednesday meeting, Museveni and Mao signed a cooperation agreement to guide the deal between DP and the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM). (Read Story Here).
