Cheptegei wins Monaco title but falls short of last year’s record

Ugandan athlete has beat off stuff competition to win the Monaco Run 5000m title within 13 minutes and 11 seconds but failed to beat his record of 12 minutes 51 seconds.

The latter record was set in February 2020.

The 5,000m and 10,000m world record holder outcompeted Kenya’s Berthwell Birgen and Davis Kiplangat, 13:18 and 13:19, respectively, to retain the title.

Cheptegei described the race as “good” but said “the wind was incredibly difficult to break.”

Currently the world’s cross country champion, Cheptegei is one of the 10 world’s athletes to hold the 5,000m and 10,000m titles at the same time.
