CID operatives arrest Kiruhura NRM registrar on Museveni orders ahead of Nyabushozi repeat poll

Operatives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigation and Crime Intelligence (CID) on October 11 arrested David Agom Andinda, the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) registrar for Kiruhura District, for engaging in acts of electoral malpractice.

With orders from President Yoweri Museveni, the Commander-in-Chief (CiC) and NRM National Chairman, Officers left CID headquarters in Kampala with the sole purpose of apprehending Andinda.

Samson Kasasira, the Rwizi region police spokesperson, has told The Pearl Times reporter in Mbarara that D/SSP Henry Mugumya commanded the operation in which Andinda was arrested.

Kasasira also confirmed Andinda was detained at the Kiruhura Police Station and will face charges of uttering false documents, forgery and conspiracy to commit a felony.

The police publicist further told this publication the force had been actively investigating allegations of electoral malpractice that Andinda was reportedly involved in during the NRM primaries.

With the investigations done and President Museveni briefed, the CiC ordered Andinda’s arrest and prosecution that is expected to kick off.

The Nyabushozi election is one of the primaries in which the NRM chairman picked interest.

After an audit into the results, Museveni ordered the arrest of polling officials involved in electoral malpractice.

After weeks of standoff, incumbent Col Fred Mwesigye emerged the winner.

But the results left many baffled at how Mwesigye had managed to garner 54,996 votes yet the total number of voters who cast their ballots for the district woman MP flag bearer was 41,629.

On October 08, Museveni and his party’s Central Executive Committee (CEC) resolved that fresh polling be conducted in 84 contested polling stations.

Museveni had received several complaints from a number of voters, most of them women opposed to Mwesigye, threatening to vote the opposition or stay away from voting as long as the incumbent unfairly remained the NRM flag bearer.

The party will now conduct the repeat polls just a few days to parliamentary nominations.

With Andinda behind bars, NRM will appoint a new returning officer for Nyabushozi.
