Collins Tanga’s Victory Nullified by NRM Tribunal; Fresh Youth League Election Ordered; Tanga Odoi Not Allowed to Preside

The NRM Election Disputes Tribunal has nullified the election victory of Collins Tanga as the chairperson of the ruling National Resistance Movement youth league.

Last month, NRM Electoral Commission (EC) chairperson Dr Tanga Odoi declared his son Collins Tanga the duly elected NRM youth league chairperson.

But the election of Collins Tanga was challenged by his rival Brenda Kiconco, who alleged that Tanga Odoi had rigged the poll in favour of his son.

Brenda Kiconco rushed to the NRM Disputes Tribunal seeking orders for the nullification of her rival’s election through a process she believed was both chaotic and rigged.

Now, a three-person tribunal led by NRM Disputes Tribunal head John Musiime, and including Esau Isingoma and Diana Kasabiiti, has nullified the election of Collins Tanga.

“Regulation 45(6) empowers the Tribunal, where non-compliance has substantially affected the result, to declare the election void, to declare another candidate elected, or to order a fresh election,” the NRM Election Disputes Tribunal ruled.

“Given the tainted tally and unreliable record, none of the petitioners can be declared duly elected. The proper remedy is to nullify the election and direct a fresh poll for Chairperson of the NRM Youth League in strict compliance with the Constitution, Regulations and Guidelines.”

The tribunal made three clear orders. It directed that the declaration of Mr. Collins Tanga as Chairperson, NRM Youth League, is hereby nullified.

It also directed the NRM Electoral Commission to conduct a fresh election for Chairperson, NRM Youth League, in strict compliance with the NRM Constitution, Election Regulations, and Polling Day Guidelines.

It also made it clear that “Dr. Tanga Odoi shall not preside over or participate in any capacity in the conduct of the fresh election. The other commissioners in the Electoral Commission shall conduct the election of the Youth League Chairperson.”
