2026 Elections

DEVELOPING STORY! Ofwono Opondo Resigning to Run for MP Seat

President Yoweri Museveni’s government spokesperson Ofwono Opondo says he is considering resigning to run for MP.

Emerging to speak for the government and the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) in 2013, Ofwono Opondo has always been lucky to have his contract renewed by President Yoweri Museveni.

For about a quarter a century, Ofwono Opondo has been spokesperson of taskforces, the NRM, government or some form of structure.

But now, he seems ready to leave and venture into elective politics – if his announcements on media shows are anything to go by.

First, Ofwono Opondo said he is going to run to represent the elderly in parliament in 2026. He made this announcement during the NBS Frontline political show.

Aged 61, Ofwono Opondo qualifies to run and to get elected to become an MP for the elderly per according to the provisions parliamentary election laws in Uganda.

Each region is represented by one elderly MP per region: Central, Eastern, Northern, and Western.

Opondo wants to represent the elderly persons of eastern Uganda, currently represented by Dominic Gidudu Mafabi, who is also the minister in charge of the elderly.

Secondly, Ofwono Opondo also seems to be interested in the Budadiri West seat currently occupied by Nathan Nandala Mafabi of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC).

“I am soon submitting my resignation letter to the president. I have my campaign funds ready. I am going to take on Nandala Mafabi and I have everything it takes to knock him out,” he told Capital Gang.

Ofwono Opondo said he has already notified Museveni that his current contract expires in 90 days.

“This Thursday, I wrote to the president notifying him of the conclusion of my tenure in another three months,” he told Gang.

“But I think that will be brought forward because on the 28th I need to put in my resignation.”

Ofwono Opondo has been critical of Museveni, the NRM and government in recent months. (See Details Here and There).

Elsewhere, five NBS journalists and presenters have resigned their jobs to contest for MP seats in 2026. (See Details Here).
