The European Union has reportedly told warned National Unity Platform (NUP) leader Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine and his supporters against fuelling a genocide in Uganda.
A delegation of EU visited Bobi Wine at his home in Magere, Wakiso District on February 04.
A statement attributed to the EU high representative said the meeting was meant to “reaffirm our commitment to the observance of democratic processes in Uganda, including the freedom of expression through selection of their leaders.”
The EU leaders congratulated Bobi Wine and NUP for participating in the recently concluded elections and praised him for making the “decision to petition the supreme court as a constitutional means of expressing political dissent and dissatisfaction.”
Bobi Wine lost the January 14 presidential election to incumbent President Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni. He has since challenged the election results in the Supreme Court whose verdict is expected by mid March 2021.
The delegation is said to have further “cautioned him [Bobi Wine] against sectarian statements made by his supporters with the purpose of fuelling a genocide in Uganda.”
There have been social media messages, reportedly attributed to NUP supporters, rallying Ugandans to protest and cause the fall of the Museveni administration.
EDITOR’S NOTE: The European Union has since dismissed the statement as fake.
