Don’t use Shs100K Covid19 relief cash to buy beer, PM Nabbanja warns Vulnerable Ugandans

Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja launched the disbursement of Shs100,000 Covid19 relief cash in Kampala with a call on recipients not to use the money to buy beer.

The launch at the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) saw Gulu Bodaboda rider Godfrey Oloya become the first beneficiary to receive the money.

Oloya confirmed he had received the money.

Nabbanja praised President Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni for caring for Ugandans.

She then warned recepients against spending the money on beer.

“In fact, he [Museveni] has been at the forefront. It is him that directed that we identify vulnerable people that feed on hand to mouth,” said Nabbanja.

“That money should be used to buy food, not beer. Let us buy food for our families, we know that covid19 is still here.”

At least 126,552 vulnerable Ugandans had been verified to receive the relief payments.

Some 500,000 Vulnerable Ugandans are expected to share just over Shs50bn to take them through the lockdown that saw several economic activities suspend for 42 days.

Only six people in the capital Kampala have received money today.

But a source in the gender, labour and social development ministry told Pearl Times News over 100,000 vulnerable poor Ugandans would receive their money before July 08 morning.

PM Nabbanja assured the vulnerable no charges would be deducted from the package.

“We agreed that telecom companies will not deduct any money from this token,” she said.

“We also agreed that people with debts on mobile money will be spared.”
