At least five Ugandans killed themselves during the festive season that included Christmas and Boxing Day, Uganda Police Force (UPF) records indicate.
Although police spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke says that generally, the security situation within the country during the Christmas period was peaceful, with no serious security breaches, the law and order agency recorded isolated incidents of criminality.
In the period under review, Rusoke noted, a total of 91 incidents — reportable offenses — were reported to police this year compared to 110 incidents registered during the festive season of last year 2023.
This reflects a reduction in the incidents registered this by 19 cases, Rusoke added.
“Resulting from the total registered incidents countrywide, 55 lives were lost, 16 suspects were arrested and the cases are at different stages of investigation,” he further noted.
Out of the 55 lives lost, 12 victims were assaulted to death, 03 were hacked to death, 02 drowned to death, 02 were lynched to death, 07 were hit using blunt objects while 06 were stabbed to death.
A total of 05 Ugandans committed suicide, 02 were strangled to death, 08 were victims of suspected sudden deaths, 04 lives were lost as a result of Rash and Negligent Acts, 01 was as a result of suspected food poisoning, 01 was as a result of suspected Arson while 02 lives were as a result of suspected murders.
