Hundreds Treated at Free Medical Camp in Mbarara

Hundreds of people have benefited from a free medical camp hosted at Kagongi Health Centre III in Kagongi Sub County, Mbarara District.

The camp was organized by Ankole Health Students Association Mulago (AHESAM) in collaboration with Fred Mwesigye, a local resident, with the aim of bridging the gap in healthcare access, especially in rural areas where government health facilities are limited.

The camp commenced on March 29, 2025 and ended on March 30, 2025 at Kagongi Health Centre III in Mbarara District.

“The idea of coming up with these free medical camps started in 2023 at  Buyenjye COU in Rubindi Sub County. Two medical camps were done last year 2024 in Nyabisirira, Nyabisirira Town Council and Karwensanga in RUbindi and this year 2025, we chose Kagongi Health Centre III in Kashari North, Mbarara District to host this free medical camp,” he added.

To address these health gaps, AHESAM and Mwesigye came together and organized a free medical camp where hundred of people received services such as hearing and vision screenings, consultations, and treatment for various health conditions.

Dr Geoffrey Mugisha, the Principal medical officer in the Clinical Services Department at the Ministry of Health, who represented the state minister for health in charge of general duties, Anifa Kawooya Bangirana, emphasized the importance of medical camps, noting that they complement the regular services provided by lower-level health facilities.

Dr Mugisha said there is a dire need for community sensitization to educate people on how to take care of their ears, prevent hearing impairments and manage dental health and eye diseases.

Mbarara District Woman Member of Parliament Magaret Ayebare Rwebyambu donated an ultrasound scan worth Shs15m to Kagongi Health Centre III to help pregnant mothers.

“Pregnant mothers have always been referred to Bwizibwera Health Centre IV and Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital for pregnancy screening due to lack of a pregnancy scan at this facility,” noted Ayebare.

Reacting to the donation, Dr Mugisha said: “I guide that the DHO’s office and the management of the District can recruit someone who has both skills of operating an ultrasound scan and also provide other services.”

As The Pearl Times has reported, other health facilities in Mbarara do not have scan machines, making mother seeking those services expensively in private facilities. (See Details Here).
