Independent MPs to Meet Museveni at Kyankwanzi

Independent MPs will meet Museveni at Kyankwanzi, speaker of parliament and ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) second national vice chairperson Anita Among has revealed.

According to the NRM, a little over 30 independent MPs “have expressed interest in working” with the NRM.

On Monday, a number of independent MPs started on a formal process to express interest in signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Museveni’s party. The MPs met at NRM headquarters in Nakasero in Kampala.

Anita Among told the independent MPs that they will get “the same benefits” as their NRM colleagues.

“As Members of Parliament, legally and politically, you are independent. You cannot cross the floor, and that is why you are independent but I want to assure you that the same benefits that NRM members receive will also be extended to you once you sign the memorandum of understanding,” said Among.

Describing herself as the dean of independents, Speaker Anita Among assured independent MPs she will ensure the non-aligned legislators have an opportunity to effectively get involved in the work of parliament.

“Our work is to support the social and economic transformation of our people. You are the voice of the people. You must work with government to deliver progress,” said Among.

The second national vice chairperson of the NRM also revealed that independent MPs will be allowed to attend a retreat of the NRM MPs at the National Leadership Institute (NALI) in Kyankwanzi.

All independent MPs who will have agreed to work with the NRM will be officially unveiled during the Kyankwanzi retreat. In this retreat, these independents will be presented to the NRM leadership headed by national chairman and Uganda’s president Yoweri Museveni.
