Speaker candidate Anita Among and deputy Speaker candidate Thomas Tayebwa
Given the numbers their party, the National Resistance Movement (NRM), commands in Parliament, it is unlikely that Anita Among and Thomas Tayebwa will lose today’s speaker and deputy speaker elections.
NRM Central Executive Committee (CEC) and Parliamentary Caucus have endorsed Anita Among, the Bukedea District Woman MP and current deputy speaker, for the speaker race. (Read Story Here).
The ruling party has also chosen government chief whip Tayebwa to contest for the deputy speaker position. (Read Story Here).
Among will face Asuman Basalirwa (Bugiri Municipality – Jeema), the opposition candidate, in the race for speaker.
Tayebwa will face Moses Okot P’Bitek (Kioga/Kyoga – FDC), in the race for deputy speaker.
Unlike something extraordinary happens, many NRM MPs are not expected to veer off the CEC and caucus line.
This means that by the close of business today, Anita Among will be the new speaker of the 11th Parliament while Tayebwa will be her deputy.
