KENYA: Activist Morara Kebaso Charged with Cyber Harassment Over President Ruto Campaign Financing Post

The Kenyan state has arraigned David Morara Kebaso, a youthful political activist and 2027 presidential hopeful, at the Milimani Law Courts following his arrest on September 30, 2024.

He faces cyber harassment charges under Section 27 of the Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes Act No. 5 of 2018.

NARC-Kenya leader Martha Karua led Morara Kebaso’s legal team that also had Willis Otieno and Ndegwa Njiru.

Outside the court presided over by Milimani Chief Magistrate Lucas Onyina, Morara Kebaso’s supporters chanted “Release Morara.”

Morara Kebaso’s woes emanate from his post on microblogging site X, formerly Twitter, about President Ruto and a one David Langata. The post related to alleged campaign financing by businessman Langata.

“On September 28, at an unknown place within Kenya jointly with others not before court, while using the X account knowingly without lawful excuse posted false information which was calculated to tarnish and discredit the reputation of one David Langat,” read the charge sheet in part.

The activist’s legal described the cyber harassment charge against the popular activist as defective, arguing that the charge relates to reputation and defamation.

It was also not clear to the defence who the complainant was. But Morara Kebaso was granted cash bail of Ksh 50,000. He will return to court for the mention of his case and to take plea on October 04, 2024.

Following his arrest on Monday, September 30, 2024, opposition politician Kalonzo Musyoka warned that Kenya was descending into darkness, and Gen Zs threatened to protest. (See Details Here).
