Letter to Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba: On Leaving X, Friday Night Banter & Why Baraza Maybe a Good Option

Dear General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, Your presence on X (formerly Twitter) has been nothing short of remarkable. Over the years, you have used your platform to promote radical ideas and advocate for freedom of expression.

While I have often found myself in disagreement with some of your opinions, ( such as cancellation of the 2023 anti homose*uality Act) I have also celebrated your unapologetic stance on free speech, which as encouraged many of us to continue exercising that same right.

I remember telling you last week that in some ways you and Isaac Ssemakadde were the unexpected champions of freedom of speech although you come from different camps. Your tweets have sparked discussions far beyond Uganda’s borders.

Who can forget some of your most controversial posts, such as the time you jokingly proposed annexing Kenya or your bold declarations about regional geopolitics? These moments, while polarizing, have made your account a must-follow for anyone interested in Ugandan politics and East African affairs.

I can’t help but recall when, back in 2022, you announced a similar break from posting, only to return a few days later with even more vigor. Is this goodbye truly permanent, or will you once again surprise us by returning to the platform? There are also rumors circulating that your account was banned due to alleged threats against Mr. Bobi Wine. Is there any truth to these claims, or are they merely unfounded speculations? Clarity on this matter would help set the record straight. But now that you are gone who is going to give us the fearless truth to this question.

We’re going to miss your lively Friday night banter, which became a sort of tradition on Ugandan social media. Whether we agreed or not, those conversations gave us something to talk about—and laugh about.

As you step away from X, I wish you success in your ongoing efforts to promote peace and stability in the region. If you’re looking for alternative ways to gather Ugandans on Twitter, why not consider hosting an in person Baraza?

You could create a space for open dialogue, accompanied by good music and, of course, a glass of red wine for those like me who enjoy it. Such an initiative could keep the spirit of connection and debate alive while offering a more structured platform for engagement.

We could hold this at Freedom Square here at the Great Makerere. I am sure that [Vice Chancellor Prof Barnabas Nawangwe] well have already gone after my recent exposure of his lack of academic credentials to even be a professor!

Farewell from X General MK, and best wishes on your journey ahead.

Sincerely,

Pr Martin Sempa
