Medals and Cash Prizes at 2025 Urban Refugee Marathon Closing Ceremony

The 2025 Urban Refugee Marathon successfully culminated in an awarding ceremony at the President’s Office, where winners received medals and cash prizes.

Held on July 20, 2025, at Old Kampala Secondary School, the marathon attracted around 10,000 participants, including refugees from Ethiopia, Eritrea, Somalia, Sudan, DR Congo, Nigeria, Burundi, alongside Ugandan nationals. The event aimed to foster unity, promote refugee integration, and celebrate inclusion between refugees and host communities.

Hon. Hajjat Sarah Kanyike, Senior Presidential Advisor on Kampala & Metropolitan Affairs, represented Ambassador Abbey Walusimbi, Senior Presidential Advisor on Diaspora Affairs—currently on an official visit to the USA. She highlighted the importance of the refugee community and Uganda’s commitment to hospitality and unity, stating:

“The refugee community is very important to us as Office of President because once you are here, you are our brothers and sisters. My sincere appreciation to all the partners and participants who helped in the preparations that led to a momentous event.”

The marathon saw strong collaboration from partners such as Next Media Services, URA, Equity Bank, Centenary Bank, DFCU Bank, Faras, UBC TV, Children’s Rights and Violence Prevention Fund, African Initiatives for Relief and Development, and refugee community leaders from several countries.
A URA representative conducted a tax education lecture encouraging refugees to engage with official tax information centers, emphasizing: “Kindly walk into any URA designated physical tax information centre to avoid brokers who may mislead you. URA is focused to empower refugee entrepreneurs with the skills and knowledge needed to build sustainable businesses and secure economic independence.”
Winners were awarded medals and cash prizes in envelopes, recognizing their talent and resilience in this inclusive event.
This ceremony forms part of wider efforts to acknowledge and celebrate the determination and contributions of refugees.
Ultimately, the marathon and awarding ceremony reinforced messages of inclusion, cooperation, and the significant role refugees play in enriching Uganda’s social and economic fabric.
