Muntu: Branding me Museveni mole is regime’s trick to weaken opposition

Alliance for National Transformation (ANT) 2021 presidential candidate Maj Gen (Rtd) Gregg Mugisha Muntu has denied being a mole incumbent President Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni planted in the opposition.

Muntu was a bush war fighter in Museveni five-year National Resistance Army (NRA) liberation struggle.

He would later serve as army commander, only to later fall out with his former boss and join the opposition.

One of the founders of now main opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) has severally been branded as a Museveni mole.

His largely non-confrontational character – unlike Museveni’s fiercest critic Dr Kizza Besigye – and his disdain for defiance made some extremist opposition FDC members label him a mole.

After losing to now fellow presidential candidate Patrick Oboi Amuriat in the FDC presidential election held at the end of 2017, Muntu left the Najjanankumbi-based party to form ANT.

Now campaigning for the country’s top seat, Muntu has warned that mole talk could be a propaganda tool used by the Museveni administration to confuse the opposition.

“You should be aware of some of the tactics the regime uses to weaken us the opposition. For example I have been accused of being a mole working for Gen Museveni,” Muntu says.

“Fellow Ugandans, let us be alert, someone who is accused of being a mole deployed to weaken the opposition can’t instead invest himself in building structures to strengthen and encourage cooperation.”

Besides working to build opposition structures, Muntu adds that his party would be fighting other political organisations if he was a Museveni mole.

“We continue to encourage you to look at our track record which by God’s grace will show you that you can trust us,” he notes.

“But think about this: If I was a mole, wouldn’t I be causing chaos amongst the opposition. Instead, as Alliance for National Transformation, we’re at peace with all the opposition parties.”
