Museveni allows health institutions’ finalists to return to classes

After President Yoweri Museveni closed all the education institutions in the country due to Covid19 pandemic in March, learners at all education levels have been home for almost six months.

But President Museveni, on September 01, allowed only candidates in health training institutions to go back to school, it has emerged.

In a letter sent to all vice chancellors and principals of health training institutions, National Council for Higher Education(NCHE) executive director Prof Mary OKwakol, announced a plan for the reopening of schools for finalists.

Prof Okwakol noted that medical students address health problems in the country, so they should be allowed to finish their studies and serve the people.

”I am pleased to inform you that H.E has approved the re-opening of institutions with final year students undertaking Health related training,” she said.

“This is to enable the students complete their studies so as to fill the human resource gap the health sector would likely face.”

Okwakol also listed the categories of students allowed to return to school.

(a) Final year students pursuing bachelors degree courses in medicine, medicine and surgery, Nursing, Midwifery, Dental surgery, Pharmacy, and Allied Medical professionals.

(b) Finalist Post graduate students on health related programs.

(c) Post graduate students (doctors, nurses and midwives) who are qualified and already health practitioners.

(d) Finalists undertaking training at Diploma level in different disciplines.
