An opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) politician has accused President Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni of betraying historicals by plotting to have his son Lt Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba succeed him in the country’s highest office.
With mega celebrations marking Lt Gen Kainerugaba’s 48th birthday, some political observers have concluded that Gen Museveni, currently aged 77, has started on the process to have his son succeed him.
Although Museveni has not come out to openly announce his son as the man he has chosen to succeed him, Lt Gen Kainerugaba, who advises his father on special operations, has hinted on a 2026 presidential run, winning power and making Uganda better.
Last month, President Museveni hosted a birthday dinner to celebrate Lt Gen Kainerugaba in an event held at State House Entebbe. Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame, who had not been to Uganda for some years due cold relations, was the chief guest and hinted on the great expectations he and others have in Muhoozi.
According to Mubarak Munyagwa, the former Kawempe South MP, Museveni has already made the decision to make his son succeed him. Munyagwa thinks that the move has already annoyed those who fought in the five-year bush war that catapulted Gen Museveni to power in 1986.
“President Museveni betrayed his fellow historicals. They still think he is still on the cause they fought for, yet he is going to give the power to the son,” Munyagwa told NBS Eagle on Sunday.
At least three people who fought in the bush war have openly commented on the rumored move to make Muhoozi succeed Museveni. Former army commander Maj Gen (Rtd) Mugisha Muntu has urged the president to allow his son to retire from the army so that he can pursue his presidential ambitions.
Two other bush war historicals have sworn never to salute Muhoozi even if he ever became Uganda’s president. (Read Story Here).
