President Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni has said Uganda will continue to exist without Uganda with or without Facebook.
In his remarks at an event to welcome Ugandan 2020 Tokyo Olympics medalists at Kololo Independence Grounds in Kampala on August 11, Museveni rebuked biased international media and big tech companies.
Junior sports minister Hamson Obua had complained that while western media such as BBC and CNN had publicized Covid19 cases in the Ugandan camp but were mute when medalists Peruth Chemutai and Joshua Cheptegei bagged gold.
Obua said he had keenly watched the western media for a mention of Uganda’s success at the Tokyo Olympics in vain.
When he stood to speak, Museveni castigated the so-called international media for being negative to Uganda.
He singled out Al Jazeera for being among the negative media outlets.
The head-of-state further spoke on the shutting down of social media site Facebook.
President Museveni suspended social media on the eve of January 14, 2021 elections.
While other social media sites would later be allowed to operate, Facebook remains suspended after accounts of several officials at the ministry of information.
Ugandans continue to use VPN to access the social media site.
Now, Museveni has said he “completely shut Facebook” because “Uganda can exist without it” and other biased media and tech giants.
He added that even with Facebook shut, cows had continued producing milk, fishing multiplying in lakes, and bananas bearing fruit.
