Junior foreign affairs minister in charge of international relations Henry Okello Oryem
Junior foreign affairs minister in charge of international relations Henry Okello Oryem has told the US government to respect Uganda’s sovereignty and give President Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni and his administration space to manage the country’s affairs.
About a week ago, the US secretary of state Antony Blinken announced visa restrictions against Ugandans accused of interfering with the 2021 elections and undermining democracy.
The US has also released a damning human rights practices report about Uganda.
According to Oryem, the Joe Biden administration is misinformed about Uganda and their allegations are baseless.
Speaking during a political show on state broadcaster UBC, the international affairs minister told the US government only a foolish leader would surrender his/her country’s sovereignty.
“Sovereignty is sovereignty! There is no country that will submit its freedom to another country unless that country or it’s president is foolish,” said the minister.
“We could have similarly made numerous statements about was happening in the US but we did not. We don’t interfere in their business and we ask them to give us space to manage this country because we are the best people to manage our country.”
