Museveni nominated, warns opposition politicians ‘working with foreigners to disturb peace’

Justice Simon Mugenyi Byabakama, the chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), on November 02 nominated incumbent Yoweri Tibuhaburwa Kaguta Museveni as a presidential candidate.

Museveni is the official ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) candidate.

Justice Byabakama nominated Museveni minutes to 11am.

In power since 1986 following a five-year bush war, Museveni is seeking to extend his rule to four decades.

With his fiercest challenger and former personal physician Dr Kizza Besigye out of the presidential race, Museveni’s NRM hopes to win with a higher margin.

But Museveni will not without challengers from his 1986 bush war class. Former army commander Maj Gen (Rtd) Gregg Mugisha Muntu of the Alliance for National Transformation (ANT) and ex-security minister Lt Gen (Rtd) Henry Tumukunde Kakurugu will be on the ballot and their nomination is schedule for November 02 afternoon.

Museveni will also face Besigye’s acolyte Patrick Oboi Amuriat, and youthful MP Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine, among others, both to be nominated on November 03.

At least 10 presidential aspirants will seek to convince 17.6 voters  who will cast their ballots at 34,344 polling stations scattered in 70,626 villages.

WARNING AGAINST CHAOS

When Besigye declined to hold FDC’s flag for a fourth time in a row since 2006, he announced he would concentrate on Plan B, aimed at rallying Ugandans to oust Museveni in a people’s revolution.

After his nomination, Museveni took time to warn Besigye and Bobi Wine, who the state has severally accused of working with foreigners to hatch a plan to forcefully take over power, of the security agencies readiness to crush them.

“Nobody will disturb our peace; we know how to fight. Whoever will try to disturb our peace will regret, you will cause yourself death,” Museveni warned.

“The one who wants to disturb, we will deal with you.”

He further warned corrupt police and security officers who had failed to bring to book those threatening violence.

Museveni told these officers they would be replaced by Ugandans who desperately want jobs.

The president further warned Ugandans to take follow Covid19 prevention guidelines.
