Museveni: Why We Have Chosen Anita Among to Replace Late Speaker Jacob Oulanyah

President Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni, the Chairman of the NRM and its Central Executive Committee (CEC) and party secretary general Richard Todwong have explained why the top organ chose Anita Among as flagbearer in the speaker race to replace the late Jacob Oulanyah.

The Pearl Times broke the news of Among’s endorsement by NRM CEC Wednesday evening. (Read Story Here).

According to the resolutions of the emergency meeting of the NRM CEC which was convened at State House Entebbe, the committee vetted 11 of the 13 MPs who had expressed interest in the speakership.

Of the 13 legislators, health Minister Dr Jane Ruth Aceng pulled out of the race early Wednesday morning. (Read Story Here).

Tororo District Woman MP Sarah Opendi did not interact with CEC because she did not turn up.

According to a resolution signed by Museveni and Todwong on behalf of CEC, the main reason for choosing Among was to uphold the culture and practice of promoting the deputy speaker to the speaker position.

“CEC, having noted that the NRM has established a culture and practice of elevating the Deputy Speaker to the position of Speaker even when there has not been any disruption and now even more when there is an emergency, HEREBY recommends to the NRM Parliamentary Caucus the RT HON AMONG ANITA ANNET for endorsement as NRM Candidate for the position of speaker of the 11th Parliament,” wrote Museveni.

But before the announcement was made, a section of NRM MPs from Northern Ugandan have rejected Among, insisting they want someone from their region to replace the late Oulanyah. (Read Story Here).
