RESTORE AGE LIMIT AND GO TO RWAKITURA: Ugandans Tell Museveni as State House Conducts Poll on Court Martial Referendum

As The Pearl Times has reported, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni had hinted on Court Martial Referendum as he attempted to make a case for the General Court Martial and the trial of civilians in the military courts.

After Museveni made a hint on holding a referendum on whether civilians should be tried in the military courts or not, State House started a poll on micro blogging site X, formerly Twitter.

State House Uganda asked users to either vote Yes or No on whether the country should have a referendum on the issue of court martials.

By publication time, over a little over 80 per cent had voted in favour of having a referendum on Court martials.

But other Ugandans wondered why the Museveni State would want to subject an issue of human rights to a referendum.

Yet others argued that a referendum on trial of civilians in military courts would be ab attempt to justify an illegality and a wastage of money on an issue that is already settled by existing national laws, and international human rights protocols.

That instead of a referendum on Court martials, the country should hold a Referendum on whether there should be elections in 2026 given complaints of opposition persecution, a biased Electoral Commission appointed by four decade ruler Gen Yoweri Museveni himself.

Others proposed that instead of holding a referendum on trial of civilians in the General Court Martial, the country should hold a referendum on restoring term limits and age limits for the presidency.

Other commenters on the state House poll on Court martial referendum proposed that any Referendum by 80-year-old Museveni should be on the issue of Museveni peacefully handing over power and retiring to his home country of Rwakitura.

Others warned that the same trials of civilians in kangaroo courts that Museveni is pushing for could one day catch him or those who vehemently defend his views.

Other commenters were worried that the referendum would be rigged in favour of Museveni’s wishes, as others called for a broad based committee comprising the opposition, civil society and international community to conduct the referendum.

You can read Museveni’s position on trial of civilians in military courts, even as his former army commander has warned him that even if her persecutes his opponent Besigye, neither he nor his government will be permanent – that he will one day go, as reported Here and There.
