The acting Leader of the Opposition in Parliament (LoP) and Butambala County MP, Muwanga Kivumbi, has challenged all main opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) MPs and other opposition legislators who have received Shs100m bribe to return it, and publicly denounce the bribery.
The opposition caucus has resolved that all MPs who have not received the money and do not intend to do so should write their names and append their signatures to a list of those who have rejected sin money.
The list is the formal resolution which the opposition MPs will sign to show that their hands are clean and to prove how they disapprove of acts of MPs digging their fingers in the public purse for their selfish needs.
Kivumbi also revealed that the list or formal resolution rejecting the money will be published in the press so that Ugandans can know who has betrayed them by stealing from them and who is on their side.
The acting LoP insisted that the public deserves to know the truth, telling all MPs: “If you claim you didn’t take the money, then put it in writing.”
The money is said to have been given to MPs as President Yoweri Museveni’s gift to them for passing the controversial coffee bill.
Other reports suggest that the money is a bribe for the MPs to vote in favour of the president’s position in the UPDF Amendment Bill where the government seeks more powers to try civilians in military courts.
