Junior education minister in charge of sports Hamson Obua has said singer Moses Ssali aka Bebe Cool agreed that his son Alpha Thierry Ssali should miss exams in cases where they coincided with football tournaments.
Alpha Ssali was part of U-20 side, the Hippos that reached the African Cup of Nations final in Nouadhibou, Mauratania.
On return, Bebe Cool expressed his disappointment with government and education ministry for failing to offer his son and others who missed O-level’s UCE papers supplementary exams.
Ayivu County MP Bernard Atiku had raised the matter before parliament, prompting a response from minister Obua.
“With regard to the CAF U-20 tournament in Nouadhibou, Mauritania, there is 1 (one) “O”-Level student, Alpha Ssali, a student at Kitante Hill School, who has Missed the examinations,” observed Obua.
But the minister said Bebe Cool had told the education ministry his son should put more focus on sports.
The singer also called for special exams for students engaged in sports.
“The Ministry spoke to Alpha Ssali’s parent, Moses Ssali aka Bebe Cool, who informed us of their decision to prioritise his football career over examinations, where the two coincide in timetabling,” Obua told Parliament.
“Mr. Moses Ssali has also proposed that we consider amending the UNEB Act to provide for students excelling in sports and engaged in national duty to sit special examinations organized for these categories.”
