Kampala Metropolitan Police (KMP) has confirmed the death of a disabled man in a fire that razed Kisenyi in Kampala on January 28.
According to KMP deputy police spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire, the fire broke out at at about 2pm on in Kakajjo Zone, Kisenyi in the Old Kampala policing area.
The deceased has been identified as Godfrey Mukasa.
“The Police Directorate of Fire Prevention and Rescue Services with the help of the residents responded at the scene and managed to extinguish the fire before it would spread to other parts of Kisenyi,” said Owoyesigyire.
“One person identified as Mukasa Godfrey, 50, a resident of the same area, was found dead during a search in the fire affected area.
It has been established that Mukasa was seated with his friends when the fire started. All his colleagues ran away, but Mukasa was unable to flee the scene given because he had disabilities. His body was found later in a burnt building. His body has been conveyed to the city mortuary Mulago for a post mortem.”
The fire also razed over 80 stores dealing in grain, grinding machines, and fridges.
“The investigative teams have picked samples from the scene to establish the cause of the fire,” added Owoyesigyire. “The scene is being guarded by the police to prevent theft of property recovered from the structures that gutted fire.”
