Gateway bus accident in Buikwe
One person has been confirmed dead and four injured in a Gateway bus accident in Buikwe District, traffic police say.
The early July 21 morning accident happened at Katovu in Ngongwe along the Katosi–Nyenga Road, according to SP Michael Kananura, the spokesperson of the Directorate of Traffic & Road Safety.
The Gateway bus, which was headed for Soroti suffered a tyre burst, and soon the driver lost control of the vehicle. The bus overturned, killing one person while four passengers sustained injuries of varying degrees.
The deceased was the driver of the same bus.
“01 person died and 04 others injured in a fatal crash that occurred today on July 21, 2025, at approximately 1:30 AM at Katovu in Ngongwe, along the Katosi–Nyenga Road in Buikwe District,” noted SP Kananura.
“The crash involved a Scania bus, Reg. No. UA 354AN, belonging to Gateway Bus Company, which was traveling from Kampala to Soroti via the Katosi route. Preliminary findings suggest the crash was caused by a front tyre burst, which led the driver to lose control of the vehicle.
The bus overturned to the right, resulting in the instant death of the driver, while 4 passengers sustained injuries of varying severity.”
According to the traffic police spokesperson, the injured were rushed to Nkonkonjeru Health Centre and Kawolo Hospital for medical attention.
Kananura further noted that the driver’s body was taken to Kawolo Hospital Mortuary for a postmortem examination, and bus towed to Ngongwe Police Station as investigations commence.
“We urge all motorists to conduct regular vehicle maintenance checks and strictly adhere to road safety regulations to prevent such tragic incidents,” he added.
Accidents have raised road safety concerns in Uganda, with activists calling for more to be done so as to reduce on the loss of lives and injuries associated with crashes.
This is the latest Gateway bus accident in recent months.
