Police in Rubirizi District have in custody Marthew Ariho, a 19-year-old security guard with Sting Security Services for allegedly shooting a police officer.
The incident occurred on 16 March in Nyakasharu I Cell, in Rubirizi Town Council, approximately 20 meters from the victim’s location.
Ariho was stationed at Bunyaruguru Development SACCO.
Marcial Tumusiime, the Greater Bushenyi police spokesperson says they detained Ariho for shooting a police officer identified as Sgt Patrick Byarugaba, 56, attached to Rubirizi Police Station and a resident of the Rubirizi Police Barracks.
Tumusiime descrided the shooting as accidental discharge narrating that the incident unfolded when Sgt. Byarugaba, who was heading to a salon before beginning his usual traffic duties, was accidentally shot in the left leg by Ariho.
The bullet, which struck him while he was about 20 meters away from the shooting site, remained lodged in his leg, authorities indicated by press time Sunday afternoon.
Tumusiime says the authorities recovered an AK-47 rifle (serial number 564210321) with four rounds of ammunition, one of which was stuck in the nozzle of the gun.
Tumusiime adds that investigations into the incident is ongoing, with police working to determine the full circumstances surrounding the shooting.
