President Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni writing
Uganda’s State House has spoken out on reports that President Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni has appointed new Electoral Commission (EC) bosses replacing the incumbent team led by Justice Simon Mugenyi Byabakama.
Reports that President Museveni had appointed former principal judge Justice Yorokamu Bamwine as the new EC chairperson had started spreading online.
The same reports also claimed that Museveni had appointed former Finance Minister Syda Bbumba as the new deputy chairperson for the Electoral Commission, replacing Hajjat Aisha Lubega.
Byabakama has been Electoral Commission chairperson since 2016 when President Yoweri Museveni appointed him to replace Dr Badru Kiggundu.
He presided over the 2021 general elections whose results were disputed by the Ugandan opposition.
Now, Faruk Kirunda, the deputy presidential press secretary has dismissed the reports of the appointment of Bamwine and Bbumba as new EC chairperson and deputy chairperson, respectively.
“The General Public is called upon to regard as fake news the social media story indicating that H.E Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has appointed Hon. Justice Yorokamu Bamwine to head the Electoral Commission, and to be deputized by Hon. Syda Bbumba,” Kirunda noted.
“In case of such appointments, you will be informed through the right channels.”
