Besigye, Maj Gen Abel Kandiho, Museveni and Biden
Opposition leader Dr Kizza Besigye has welcomed sanctions against the commandant of Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence (CMI), Maj Gel Abel Kandiho, but demanded freezing of funding to the security agency.
The sanctions against Maj Gen Kandiho were announced on December 07 by the US Treasury Department. The Treasury said Kandiho was involved in acts of repression in Uganda.
“Ahead of the Summit for Democracy, the US is demonstrating its commitment to supporting victims of repressive activities and human rights abuse worldwide. Accordingly, the US Treasury Department designated actors in Iran, Syria, and Uganda for their connection with serious human rights abuses,” tweeted US secretary of state Antony Blinken.
Besigye has since urged Blinken to ensure that the US stops funding agencies that oppress citizens.
“A step in the right direction,” he said of sanctions against Kandiho.
“Halt funding that benefits the oppressive institutions.”
