UCC Orders Concert Organizers to Get Permits as it Suspends Vulgar Songs by Gravity Omutujju, Lil Pazo

Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has suspended controversial songs such as Enkudi, Okwepiicha, Enyama, and Omunio, with singers Yasin Mukasa aka  Lil Pazo and Gereson Wabuyi aka Gravity Omutujju getting in trouble with the media and communications regulators.

The songs are considered vulgar. The suspension, announced during a presser in Kampala, is a step towards efforts to wipe vulgar music and public entertainment off the media scene.

The songs by Gravity Omutujju and Lil Pazo had received condemnation from the musicians’ association and from Buganda Kingdom, with Prime Minister (Katikkiro) Peter Mayiga directing staff at the Mengo-run BBS TV and CBS Radio never to play the controversial music.

While Lil Pazo apologized to Buganda and Mayiga, Gravity Omutujju was adamant, telling the Kingdom’s Prime Minister to focus on more pressing issues affecting Ugandans.

UCC Executive Director Nyombi Thembo said he had nothing against Gravity Omutujju and Lil Pazo.  “I have no issue with my sons Lil Pazo and Gravity Omutujju because I am their good fan minus that music,” Nyombi said.

He then threatened tough actions against media stations playing vulgar music. “Any radio stations or television station which engages in playing suspended music , we shall confiscate their transmitters or disconnect their masts without any further warning.”

Meanwhile, UCC has also reminded concert organizers to obtain permits from the Commission in line with the Stage Plays and Public Entertainment Act and regulations made there under.

UCC ED Nyombi Thembo also noted that the Commission would now come out hard on provocative shows and dances on all media and shows.

“The Commission acknowledges that this vulgarity goes beyond broadcasting and extends to public entertainment. Indeed, many of us might have at one point come across clips of live performances in public spaces that left us embarrassed before our own children and baffled at the audacity of the organizers and performers of such shows,” said Nyombi.

“This growing trend of both local and international artists engaging in provocative and offensive live performances is a threat to social order and can no longer be tolerated let alone ignored.”
