Uganda Airlines boss sacking: Minister says CEO, senior managers sent on leave

Works and transport minister Gen Edward Katumba Wamala has dismissed reports of the sacking of Uganda Airlines CEO Cornwell Muleya, insisting he was on leave.

Reports had claimed CEO Muleya and other managers had been asked to go on leave since there wasn’t a lot of business to conduct.

“I would like to clarify these speculations about top Uganda Airlines bosses being suspended,” started Minister Katumba Wamala.

“Because of the low tempo operations caused by COVID19 and the fact that we have not yet started the long haul operations, top management at Uganda Airlines were asked to take leave.”

While media reports had claimed that President Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni himself had ordered the minister to send Muleya and his senior management team on leave and investigate them for corruption and mismanagement, Wamala said the decision was meant to offer deputies experience and prepare seniors for work ahead.

“This was done to train and test deputies for quality assurance; let top management rest as we prepare for the long haul operations.”

He also added that senior staff had to take a break since “accumulated leave would cost the airline at some point.”
