Uneb Breaks Silence on Reports of Leaked PLE Examination Papers

Assessment body Uganda National Examinations Board (Uneb) has spoken out on reports that copies of papers for next week’s Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE) have leaked days before the dates they are scheduled to be sat by hundreds of thousands of candidates across the country.

Uneb Principal Public Relations Officer (PRO) Jennifer Kalule-Musamba has now suggested that she was misquoted by reporters during a press conference on Monday, October 31, and that the rumored leakage was in regard to papers of the ongoing O-level (S.4) Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) examinations.

Responding to the purported leakage of Primary Leaving Examination (PLE) papers, Kalule-Musamba said that the alleged leaked papers were those of O-level which were being circulated on social media.

“Reference is made to a statement attributed to me indicating that Primary Leaving Examination (PLE) papers have leaked, ahead of the start of the said examination, next week,” she said. “I would like to clarify that the two cases referred to during the joint police briefing on Monday October 31, were in respect of purported UCE examination papers that were circulating on social media.”

She further made it clear that the two suspected cases which are being probed by both Uneb and Uganda Police Force (UPF) have nothing to do with the PLE examinations which candidates will sit next week. She also insisted that no PLE paper had leaked so far, further assuring all education stakeholders that the assessment body had put in place measures to plug the holes that were previously being exploited by those interested in leaking papers.

“This is therefore to explain that the cases of two people under investigation that I referred to were not in respect of the forthcoming Primary Leaving Examination (PLE). Most importantly, the Board wishes to reiterate that there has not been any LEAKAGE of the Primary Leaving Examination (PLE) papers. We call upon the public to ignore messages indicating that there has been such a leakage,” she explained.

“The Board would like to assure the public that stringent measures are in place to ensure that no examination leakages take place. We have so far managed to achieve this for UCE, and similar arrangements are in place for the Primary Leaving Examination, due next week.”

She has also urged members of the public to desist from cheating exams, and to report any suspects of this vice to police and the assessment body. “UNEB strongly warns the public against involvement in any form of examination malpractice. We call upon anybody with useful information related to the ongoing UNEB examinations to report to police immediately or inform the Board using our toll free lines; O800-11-427; 0800-211-077,” she noted.
