UNEB withholds PLE results of 2,220 Candidates over alleged cheating

The Uganda National Examinations Board (Uneb) has revealed it has withheld Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE) results for atleast 2,220 candidates for examination malpractices.

The assessment body released the results on July 16 at a State House event presided over by first Lady and Education Minister Janet Kataaha Museveni. 

According to Uneb, a total of 749,761 candidates from 14,300  schools registered for PLE in 2020 while 695,804 did in 2019. 

The majority of these, 513,085 (68.4 per cent) from 11,231 centres were under the Universal Primary Education (UPE) program.

The rest, 236,677 (31.6 per cent) were from private schools.

Uneb executive secretary Dan Odongo said the most affected districts are in Rwenzori region, with Kasese and Bundibugyo leading the pack of suspected cheaters.

“Schools whose results are withheld will be notified through their District Inspectors of Schools. All candidates whose results have been withheld will be accorded a fair hearing by the Board’s Examinations Security Committee,” explained Odongo.

Thereafter, he continued, the lists of schools whose results have been cancelled will be published in the media.

The executive secretary further revealed that examination paper distributors who opened the envelopes to aid cheating for some schools in Masaka and Nakasongola will face courts of law as provided for under the Uneb Act.
