UPDF: Arrested Victoria University Vice Chancellor was Spying on Uganda

Uganda’s national army, the UPDF, has spoken out on the arrest of Victoria University vice chancellor Dr Lawrence Muganga.

Dr Muganga is also the chairman of the Bavandimwe, an association of Rwandans born in Uganda.

A video shared by witnesses at the scene of Dr Muganga’s arrest shows security operatives besieging the Victoria University vice chancellor and beckoning him to a waiting van.

This video had prompted conclusions that Dr Muganga had been kidnapped.

Now, UPDF spokesperson Brig Gen Flavia Byekwaso has confirmed the arrest of Dr Muganga.

Brig Gen Byekwaso dismissed reports that Muganga was kidnapped.

She also revealed that the vice chancellor was arrested over illegal entry into the country as well as for spying on Uganda.

“Social media reports that Vice Chancellor Victoria University Dr Lawrence Muganga was kidnapped are false,” said Byekwaso in a statement.

“He was arrested by joint Security Forces in connection with espionage and illegal stay in the country. Investigations into the matter have commenced.”
