Bobi Wine, Tamale Mirundi and Muhoozi Kainerugaba
Controversial and motormouthed ‘former’ presidential advisor and mouthpiece Joseph Tamale Mirundi has revealed his preferred choice to succeed President Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni in 2026 – picking between first son Lt Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba and NUP leader Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine.
Museveni began another five-year term at the end of which he will have ruled Uganda for four decades.
It is not clear if the former bush war general, currently aged 77, will seek reelection in 2026.
One of his close media spin masters Andrew Mwenda says only death will stop Museveni from contesting in 2026 and beyond. (Read story here).
But the debate on the Museveni succession continues, and his ‘crown prince’ Lt Gen Kainerugaba an integr part of it.
The latest show of Kainerugaba’s influence was the reopening of the Katuna (Gatuna) border point after almost three years of closure following a meeting between the first son and Rwandan president Paul Kagame. (Read story here).
Besides Kainerugaba, opposition leaders such as Dr Kizza Besigye and Bobi Wine remain key players in the succession equation.
When Mirundi appeared on Balaam Barugahara’s Radio Four, host Adam Kungu posed to him a question sent by a listener who wanted to know who he supports between Kainerugaba and Bobi Wine.
And Mirundi chose the first son.
“You also have a right to choose your Kyagulanyi,” added the commentator.
