WAR OF WORDS Between Chris Obore & Ex-MP Odonga Otto over Parliament Spokesperson’s Shs17m Monthly Salary

Parliament’s director of communication and public affairs Chris Obore has fired back at former Aruu County MP Samuel Odonga Otto after the ex-legislator complained about the spokesperson’s Shs17m salary.

It all began when Otto wondered why Obore should earn Shs17m when a doctor gets Shs3.3M.

With this comparison, Otto questioned the priorities of the Ugandan government.

Uganda May God uphold thee! How can Chris Obore, a Public Relations Officer earn 17 million shillings a month plus a  government vehicle fully fueled and yet a  Medical doctor in Mulago National Referall Hospital  earns  3.3million shillings a month? Are our priorities right?” wondered the former lawmaker.

In response, Obore accused Otto of blackmail, saying the ex-MP is not happy that he (Obore) thinks President Museveni’s son Lt Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba has a right to run for the country’s top office.

Obore also says he is not the one who determines salaries. He also wondered why Otto did not ensure that doctors earned a higher pay than MPs when he was still a legislator.

“Otto is angry that I said no law stops Gen Muhoozi from standing for President. His response is that blackmail Obore,” said Obore.

” So what? Am I the decision maker on salaries in Uganda ? He was MP till recently, was his pay lower than that for doctors?”

The issue of salaries for doctors and other civil servants has remained thorny over the years.

In August 2021, Museveni cabinet approved salary increment for teachers, doctors and other health workers. (Read Story Here).

Government had also promised huge salary increments for all its employees in the 2021-2022 financial year. (Read Story Here).
