Minister Gen David Muhoozi
State Minister for Internal Affairs Gen David Muhoozi has explained why President Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni’s government wants to increase fees charged for the renewal of national identity (ID) cards from Shs50,000 to Shs500,000.
Minister Gen Muhoozi was responding to a question raised by Paulson Kasana Semakula Luttamaguzi who complained that the fees were too high.
According to Gen Muhoozi, the fees will only affect those who want to make correctionx of Dates of Birth “and not all other changes as was misreported in the media.”
According to the junior minister National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA)-Uganda suggested an increment of fees for citizens who seek to change dates of birth where the “error’ was made by the card bearers because of a surge in applications for changes in dates of birth.
“The background to this proposal is premised on the surge of applications ranging between 1000-5000 a month, with 85 per cent of applicants requesting for the adjustment to match the 25 – 38 age bracket,” explained Muhoozi.
But the minister said the changes were yet to be approved, and that a comprehensive consultative process would happen before the proposal is approved or dropped.
“This proposal is still subject to consideration by Government and all the stakeholders, including this honorable House, and therefore has not been approved and effected,” said Muhoozi.
