President-Elect William Samoei Ruto has called on Kenyans to pray for outgoing president Uhuru Kenyatta so that he can peacefully hand over office to his successor and hand the nation another transition.
Speaking at Larmudiac Secondary School in Njoro constituency, Nakuru County on Sunday Ruto sounded confident that the Supreme Court of Kenya will rule in his favour.
At Larmudiac SS, Ruto was the chief guest at an event where interdenominational prayers organized by scores of churches were held.
“I am sure that [on Monday, September 05], our victory will be confirmed and shortly we will focus on building the nation and fulfilling the commitments we made to our people,” said Ruto.
Seven justices of the country’s apex court led by Chief Justice Martha Koome are expected to deliver their ruling on a presidential election petition filed by Ruto’s main challenger Raila Odinga and his running mate Martha Karua.
Odinga was outgoing president Kenyatta’s preferred successor.
Hours before the apex court final verdict, Ruto prayed for wisdom so that Kenyatta can steer a smooth transition.
“I want to ask Kenyans to pray for [President Uhuru Kenyatta] to be filled with wisdom and discernment to spearhead the transition so that as a country we can move forward peacefully,” said Ruto, Kenya’s deputy president for the past one decade.
He also promised to respect the court verdict if the judges rule in Odinga’s favour.
Deputy president-elect Rigathi Gachagua noted that there was urgent need to focus on the business at hand after Monday’s verdict.
“We want the country to swiftly return to normalcy so that Dr William Ruto can take over the revival of the economy from where Kibaki left,” said Gachagua.
Meanwhile, Kenya is on edge as tension rises ahead of Monday’s Supreme Court ruling. Security has been beefed up across the country. National Police Service has announced that some Nairobi City roads will be closed at least two hours to the Supreme Court ruling. (Read Story Here).
