AGAIN! Singer Jose Chameleone in Trouble with URA for Failing to Pay Taxes

Singer Joseph Mayanja aka Jose Chameleone has been listed among over 800 individuals, companies and government ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs) that have defaulted on their taxes as set by Uganda Revenue Authority (URA).

According to a list of tax defaulters the ministry of finance, planning and economic development (Mofped), Jose Chameleone has failed to clear Shs28m in taxes.

In July 2020, Jose Chameleone asked to settle his Shs77m tax evasion case outside court.

Uganda Revenue Authority-URA and musician Joseph Mayanja aka Chameleone have agreed to settle the 77 million shillings tax evasion case outside court.

The case had come up after police found the singer in possession of a South Sudanese vehicle registration number SSD 499B, Toyota Land Cruiser V8 Model along Wakaliga-Bulange Mengo on April 12, 2020, without documents proving its legal status in Uganda.

The state had dragged Jose Chameleone to court for failing to pay import duty to the tune of Shs77m.

URA valued the vehicle at Shs137m.

While Jose Chameleone was expected to take plea in his tax evasion case in July 2020, State Attorney Hilda Bakanansa told the Anti-Corruption Court Chief Magistrate Pamela Lamunu Ocaya that on July 21, Mayanja had requested tax collector URA to have the matter settled outside court.

The singer also asked court to allow him pay his tax arrears in installments.

Consequently, Jose Chameleone signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with URA, committing to clear his arrears in a space of four months.

The singer was required to pay Shs20m every month.
