Anti-corruption court summons singer Chameleone over car with South Sudan number plate

The Anti-corruption court has ordered singer Jose Chameleone to report to court and explain himself over a car with a South Sudan number plate.

Chief magistrate Pamela Lamunu Ocaya summoned Jose Chameleone (real name Joseph Mayanja) to appear in court on July 30.

Chameleone reportedly failed to clear Shs137m as import duty for a car.

He faces two charges for flouting provisions of the East African Community Customs Management Act of 2004.

The charges are: being in possession of unaccustomed goods and failure to produce documents for the car.

The South Sudanese vehicle in question is a Toyota Land Cruiser V8 model registration number SSD 499B.

Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) customs officer Simon Peter Ogwang is the main prosecution witness.

Ogwang alleges that he and other URA officers found Chameleone in possession of the car along Wakaliga-Bulange Mengo on April 12 2020.

Chameleone was headed for a performance at BBS TV on Easter Sunday when URA enforcement officers stopped him.

They asked him to present the car’s documents to ascertain its legal status in the country.

He told them the documents were at his home.

 But months since the incident, the singer has failed to deliver the papers.

URA hoped to recover Shs137m from Chameleone in import duty.
