CONFIRMED: US Ambassador William W. Popp Yet to Apologize or Leave Uganda

US Ambassador William W. Popp is yet to leave Uganda. The US envoy is also yet to issue any formal or informal apology to President Yoweri Museveni or his son and military chief Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba.

Ugandans have been counting down to Monday, 07 October 2024, 9AM – the ultimatum that Gen Muhoozi had given to US Ambassador William W. Popp to apologize or pack his bags and wait for orders to leave Kampala.

Ever since he demanded the apology over claims that US Ambassador William W. Popp had disrespected President Museveni and undermined the constitution, Gen Muhoozi has done two things: delete the posts on microblogging site X (formerly Twitter), and become quiet. But his demands seem to have given him a few lessons on how and how not to request an apology – and may be how or how not to fire an envoy.

As it is now becoming clear to Gen Muhoozi and his legion of praise singers, in diplomacy, you don’t just demand an apology on social media – that is clearly a wrong forum, at least for serious nations.

Also, if you want an apology, you write to the person or office you want to apologize to requesting them to apologize! And as far as it is concerned, the US embassy in Uganda says it has not received any such request from Gen Muhoozi or any Ugandan office requesting Ambassador William W. Popp to issue an apology.

That request would also have to have details of the reasons Gen Muhoozi is unhappy with US Ambassador William Popp and why exactly he would want him to apologize or be on the next plane. The details of the allegations against William W. Popp are not yet clear.

What is clear, however, is that the US Ambassador has not apologized and he is still in Uganda. (See Details Here).
